Woohoo, was I excited when I pulled onto the shore thinking I might have seen another lilac colored Marsh skullcap, only to find this instead! It's the first time I've seen Allegheny Monkeyflower (Mimulus ringens), but I knew right away what it was when I got close.
I've read that the common name comes from the blossom's similarity to a monkey's face, but I'm not seeing it. It's visited by bumblebees, is a larval host for butterflies, and grows best along pond edges and other wet areas.
