Gassy Algae

Don't panic everybody - this is algae, yes, but its presence doesn't make it a "bloom." Algae are a vital component of lake ecosystems, having an important job in the aquatic food web, and in providing oxygen.

The bubbles form as it photosynthesizes and releases oxygen. The gassy bubbles help it float and bring the mat up to the surface. I pressed down on a bubble with my hand and it merely deformed and squished off in another direction - it didn't pop.

High temperatures aid photosynthesis, so this year's hot summer naturally means we're seeing a lot more algal growth on our lake. It's what happens when conditions are favorable! You can see the edge of the algal cloud in the next photo, where the reflection looks less slick.
