I don't know which bug this cocoon belonged to, but it looked fascinating enough to bring inside for some photos. I've tried to identify it with Google Lens, but so far no solid answers 😕, some beetle or wasp possibly?
The whole cocoon looks like coir, or compressed dried grass with bits of pine needles attached as well. There is a small piece of lichen inside the opened cocoon.
The back edge of it looks as if it was attached on the inside face of the tree bark.
