It's always fascinating to see the water currents slow down and eventually come to a stop, as if someone's turned off the engine, and everything's gone quiet. The dark strip is open water, between 2 thin sheets of ice cover.
One day later, the cove has a coating of ice too, and there's only one small dark patch of open water out there. The mallards that had been puttering and splashing about come and go, especially around mid-day when the sun has destroyed dome of the icy skin
