Closing In

It's always fascinating to see the water currents slow down and eventually come to a stop, as if someone's turned off the engine, and everything's gone quiet. The dark smooth strip is open water, between 2 sections of thin ice cover. 

A day after this was taken, our cove in the foreground had a coating of ice too, and there was only one small dark patch of open water out there. The mallards that have been puttering and splashing about regularly still come and go, but more especially so around mid-day when the sun has devoured some of the icy skin on the surface.
