A True Refuge

How does one follow up after a magnificent mountain of a day? By visiting a local treasure called Hirundo Wildlife Refuge, that's how! This is truly a refuge for wildlife in the purest, most literal sense of the word - there is NO hunting permitted, which is unusual. Pets are not allowed, either, as they disturb and threaten the offspring of ground nesting birds and animals. I absolutely adored being in this environment.

The foliage along the banks of the Pushaw river was amazing - it could have been an exquisite painting, so tranquil, peaceful and deliciously soliloquous! Look at this spectacular show!

I loved the way this lichen looked as if it had been draped like a cloth over the rock

We all know about tree-huggers, but have you heard of rock-huggers? Even trees do it!

I loved the mossy shoes these trees were wearing

The barbs on this black hawthorn look pretty daunting

We just love our Hawthorn tree. It adds a burst of color against the early winter's snow. Ours got ill, but we were able to save it with the gentle care of an arborist who identified and treated the fungus that it suffered from. When it's trimmed, it draws blood, but we still love it just the same.
