Native Holly

I'm sure we've all seen the vibrant red of winterberry fruits at this time of year.

Did you know it is a holly, sometimes referred to as Canada Holly?

Songbirds love foraging on this bounty, but the berries are poisonous to humans in large quantities, so we can't exploit this resource for ourselves.

Ilex verticllata is an emergency food supply for birds overwintering since they persist for months.

I love seeing them from my kayak as I paddle along the shore - they're so cheery and iridescent in the fall sun.

And at sunset, they take on a luminous glow.
