We have finally found the perfect shade-providing solution for our exposed deck. We didn't want something seasonal that we would have to pack away each year, nor something that we had to fold up every time the winds picked up. But we also wanted something that would not lead to excess snow accumulation and weight if left up all year, and we definitely didn't want something getting in the way of our view of the lake. We are delighted with this louvred structure that allows us to stay shady, or dry, but which can be opened to let light or snow through when necessary.
The pic below shows how rainproof it is - wet outlines on either side of the protected structure.
Update: When the rain thunders down torrentially as it did today, it tips the louvers sideways and spills water onto the seating area. Oh well, we're not likely to be sitting outside during drenching downpours anyway. It is mostly for shade.See Pergola Assembly for how it was done from an Amazon kit.
