A Hemiparasite

After identifying this beautiful little native, the small-flower false foxglove, I also found out that it is semi parasitic, which I find fascinating!


Though it does photosynthesize, it also extracts some nutrients (sugars and proteins) from other plants using specialized roots called haustoria. Its scientific name is Agalinis paupercula, an annual plant of wetlands and lake shores - mine was growing on one of our floating stump gardens in our cove. So pretty!

A few days later, I spotted some in the wetlands I traverse often, and the display of variegated grass blades made for an impressive backdrop:
