On a day with a high wind advisory, sunshine and bitter temperatures, I 'suited up' like a Michelin man for a stroll along the boardwalk. At the cove, I was excited to see ephemeral movements of water and air, heaving and moving under the ice crust, as if with a life of its own. It looked like paint spreading and retreating in a painting - languid, calming.
I thought of an ice dance performance - fluid and graceful. I was so intrigued that I stopped to record it (apologies for not remembering to rotate my phone yet again - believe me, it's hard not to have a brain freeze in these temperatures). I went back to re-do it correctly later, but it was no longer happening, so here it is in its imperfection - it's a very soothing and subtle motion.
I hope you will take a look at this incredible occurrence. It comes and goes unexpectedly, and just when you think it's over, it moves again! The clip is only about a minute long:
