What Galls You?

 

I recently got a few more Virginia rose specimen for my native-focused garden, and whilst planting them out, I noticed one had this interesting looking "weapon" attached to it, making me think of a medieval 'morning star' or caveman's club!



It's yet another gall, can you believe it? This one is quite magnificent. It's a wasp that specializes in laying its eggs on rose bushes, which then grow and feed inside their specially created little world.

Pretty, Amazing Carnivore

My beautiful round-leaved sundew awaits a fleshy meal. It has no teeth, nor talons. Instead its sticky tentacles trap insects, working just like an adhesive to keep it there while the plant's enzymes dissolve it. Was flypaper modeled after them, I wonder?




The green flower bud on the tall stem that comes up out of the center of the dewy-looking leaf rosette is getting ready to open.

They help keep mosquito populations down, so show them some respect: don't destroy their habitat. Look at all the trapped bugs!
